Water Quality

Water quality, protection, and conservation are critical to the sustainable development of Caribbean coastal and marine resources, including the island of Puerto Rico. Unplanned coastal development and urban sprawl are threatening the quality of both coastal and fresh water supplies. Many rivers in Puerto Rico reflect high levels of chemical pollution, erosion and sediments. Wetlands and creeks are being buried contributing to severe coastal droughts and floods. Surface water eutrophication is increasing dramatically, and pollution from industrial, agricultural, and domestic wastes is a serious threat to the coastal waters of our island.
UPR Sea Grant actively promotes strategies to control point and non-point source pollution, ranging from the development of a clean marina program to the development of a project that encourages the use of organic detergents by upland households. In addition, the UPR Sea Grant Water Quality Specialist actively participates in public policy processes and initiatives that promote the sustainable and wise use of Puerto Rico’s water resources.
The development and implementation of effective local planning strategies, water conservation and protection programs, sustainable development, renewable energy alternatives, state enforcement of regulations, and a problem-solving attitude among policy makers, communities and state and federal agencies are the cornerstone of the Water Quality Extension Program of the Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program.
