Study Trips

All study trips depend on weather conditions.

Study trips to different natural areas give participants the opportunity to observe and identify the different coastal and marine ecosystems of Puerto Rico. The maximum quantity of participants is 20. These trips are carried out each year from February to April and September to November.

Importante: Nos comunicaremos con usted para coordinar la fecha del viaje de estudio. Se requiere un donativo de $50.00 por viaje. La escuela es responsable de la transportación.

During each trip participants will be able to:

  • Familiarize themselves with the principal characteristics of each environment.
  • Identify the organisms and communities typical to each ecosystem.
  • Understand the existing interactions between organisms, the environment and human beings.
Esto es un Estuario

This is an Estuary (Approximately 4.5 hours)

This trip is carried out in the Humacao Natural Reserve. In the reserve, participants will visit the lagoon, and through trails, they will traverse the forest until reaching the beach. Participants will execute activities on water quality, sand studies, beach profiling, among others. Said activities will help in the process of becoming acquainted with and understanding these ecosystems.

Introduction to Marine Environments (Approximately 5.5 hours)

This trip consists of a visit to the coastline, particularly to mangroves, sand and rock beaches, and seagrass ecosystems. The scheduled time for the trip is from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM. This trip takes place in the Cabezas de San Juan Natural Reserve in Fajardo.

Punta Tuna Wetlands (Approximately 4.5 hours)

In the Punta Tuna Natural Reserve participants will study and become acquainted with mangroves and pond-apple forests, as well as a sand beach. They will walk through the coastal forest until they reach the wetlands to observe the flora and fauna of the area.

Beaches (Approximately 4.5 hours)

In Punta Santiago Beach participants will study the characteristics of said beach, its ecological processes and the adaptations of its organisms. Students will become familiar with the usage of some equipment, such as: nets, transects and quadrants.
