About Us / Staff

The University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College Program is an educational program dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean and coastal resources of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the wider Caribbean area. Our mission is twofold: 1) To conduct scientific research of excellence in the thematic areas of: water quality, fisheries and mariculture, coastal community economic development, and coastal hazards and safety; and 2) To apply our scientific knowledge to a variety of marine and coastal problems and issues that our community of users face everyday.

Since the beginning of the '80's, Sea Grant has operated through the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez and Humacao campuses. The work of Sea Grant is based on collaboration with other universities, industry, government agencies and resource users and the investigations conducted by research, education and through public service. UPR Sea Grant is made up of three components: Research, Education and Outreach, all served by our Communications division.
